Class Descriptions

Puppy Head Start (puppies 8 to 16 weeks)
Puppy Head Start focuses on the priorities of puppyhood: socialization, bite inhibition and the prevention of common behavior problems. Puppies are positively introduced to a variety of new stimuli, learn to enjoy being handled by new people, and play offleash in compatible puppy play groups. House training, crate training, puppy nipping, chewing, home alone training and polite manners are covered. Puppies must be 8 to 16 weeks old when class begins. Do bring your puppy with you to the first class.

Puppy Manners (puppies 4 to 7 months)
Puppy Manners offers basic training and ongoing socialization for puppies, either as a continuation of Puppy Head Start or as puppy’s first class. Topics include polite greetings, basic skills and problem-solving as well as off-leash play in compatible puppy play groups. Puppies must be 17 weeks to 7 months old when class begins. Do bring your puppy with you to the first class.

Puppy Next Step (puppies 12 months or under at the start of class; Pre-requisite: Puppy Manners or instructor permission)
Build on your puppy's basics and introduce new skills including Go to Place and the out-of-sight Stay.

Dog Manners (8 months or older-it's never too late!)
Dog Manners focuses on building the dog/handler relationship through basic training, leadership and awareness of how dogs communicate. Topics covered include polite greetings, basic skills, techniques for preventing unwanted behavior and appropriate dog/dog interactions (on leash). Dogs must be at least eight months old when class begins. DO NOT BRING DOGS TO THE FIRST CLASS.

Super Manners (Pre-requisite: Dog Manners or instructor permission)
Super Manners adds a higher level of distraction and difficulty to the basic skills and introduces new skills. Emphasis is on performance in the real world.

Introduction to Agility (Agility Level 1) (Pre-requisite: Dogs must pass the Agility Entrance Skills Test. Call (206) 914-6157 or send an e-mail to make an appointment.)

Team up with your dog to learn how to navigate obstacle courses together! Agility is a great way to build confidence in a shy dog or to focus the energy of an exuberant dog. Obstacles introduced include jumps, tunnels, and the table. Handling exercises introduce sends, calls, post turns and front crosses.

Agility Obstacles and Handling (Agility Level 2) (Pre-requisite: Introduction to Agility or Instructor Permission.)

Agility Patterns and Proofing (Agility Level 3) (Pre-requisite: Instructor Permission.)

Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Preparation (Pre-requisite: Super Puppy, Dog Manners or instructor permission)
Canine Good Citizen Prep prepares students and their dogs to take the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test, a certification program designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. For more details, please visit www.akc.org. At the end of the course, there will be an opportunity to take the CGC test for a small fee. Dogs who have their CGC certificates are eligible to apply for the Seattle Humane Society’s volunteer Visiting Pet Friends program.

Tricks and Clicks (Pre-requisite: Basic Manners or instructor permission)
Tricks and Clicks is a fun class for dogs that have mastered the basics. Use a clicker to shape tricks and other behaviors. Learn to train your dog tricks of your choice, ranging from shake and high five to spin, roll over, backup, or my favorite, "Find my keys!"

Control Unleashed (Pre-requisite: Super Puppy, Super Manners, CGC Prep or instructor permission)
Do you envision taking your dog to off leash dog parks or off leash hiking, but your dog bolts at the first opportunity? Are you interested in pursuing dog sports such as agility or flyball? If so, CU may be the perfect fit! Exercises focus on building your connection and training relationship with your dog to ensure that you stay connected whether the leash is there or not. (Class is modeled on the book “Control Unleashed” by Leslie McDevitt.) Prerequisite: Super Puppy, Super Manners, CGC Prep or instructor permission.
