cooperative care: bridging the gap
professional series: continuing education for trainers
address five common weaknesses of cooperative care training
Cooperative Care holds space for the emotional and cognitive needs of animals while attending to their husbandry and veterinary care. Commonly, even the most skilled trainers will experience setbacks or unanticipated gaps in their training when making the leap from practice sessions to real veterinary visits or grooming. In this half-day in-person seminar, you will learn five common areas to bridge the gap between practice and reality from an experienced veterinary technician, specialist in behavior, and high level referral consultant.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this in-person workshop, attendees will be able to:
1) Identify five common differences between practice care and real-time
veterinary care.
2) Transform knowledge of these common differences into improved
observational routines during training.
3) Understand the importance of recreating every step in a clinical
procedure in an ethical and appropriate way.
4) Communicate with a team mate/co-trainer during real-time training
sessions regarding observations of animal responses to handling.
5) Create a detailed exposure hierarchy for a common veterinary
procedure (injections).
6) Evaluate animal threshold of tolerance during a training session.
7) Develop scripts for coaching clients regarding identifying
thresholds, appropriate scaling of exposures, and creating an efficient
and effective training plan.
8) Understand the importance of communication between the client and the
veterinary team or groomer before, during, and after care events to
promote a cooperative care approach.
